The sensitivity and specificity of the a commercial milk leukocyte differential (MLD) test ranged from 44-77% and 54-92%, respectively, in identifying infected quarters. The proportion of quarters positive to bacteriological culture and the incidence of clinical mastitis did not differ for cows treated with either blanket dry cow therapy (DCT) or selective DCT based on MLD test results.

The presence of intrauterine E. coli and T. pyogenes was associated with greater odds of reproductive tract disease. Cows with E. coli positive for iron acquisition, maltose and glucose transport, hemolysin E toxin production, and increased serum survival genes had greater odds of developing reproductive tract disease compared to cows without these E. coli strains.

Vaginal discharge score (≥ mucus with flecks of pus) had the highest sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing reproductive tract disease in dairy cows. Leukocyte esterase (≥ moderate amount of leukocytes) had similar accuracy than endometrial cytology (≥ 6% neutrophils). Mean within-herd prevalence of reproductive tract disease was estimated at 47.9%.
